Welcome to year 1!
This year, your teachers will be Miss Sylla, Miss Das, and Miss Jackson. We are eagerly looking forward to an exciting and productive year together, filled with lots of engaging learning opportunities!
In our English lessons, we will be delving into a variety of books, starting with traditional tales in the autumn term. Following that, we will explore “Tusk Tusk,” a beautifully illustrated picture book written by David McKee. Through these texts, we will focus on the art of storytelling, paying careful attention to the sequence of events.
Additionally, the children will have daily phonics lessons to enhance their phonics skills. Reading holds significant importance at our school, and to ensure the children have the best chances of success, we kindly request that they read for 10 minutes every night. Each child has a school reading book and reading record, where you can note down their reading progress. The more practice they have reading aloud, the better! Please make sure the children come to school prepared, with their reading record completed each day.
In Mathematics, we will be following the White Rose curriculum. At the beginning of the year, we will focus on counting and recognizing numbers up to 10, followed by numbers up to 20. We will emphasize accurate counting of objects and its connection to written numerals. Building upon this foundation, we will work with numbers within 20, practicing addition and subtraction using concrete resources. Our math journey will then continue as we explore 2D and 3D shapes, recognizing, sorting, and creating patterns.
For our Project-based learning this half term, our focus will be on geography. The guiding question for the project is “Where do we live?” We will closely explore our city, with a specific focus on Humberstone village. The children will learn about both human and physical features, ultimately working towards creating an aerial view map of the school grounds that highlights these features.
Regarding Physical education (PE), the children will have their first lesson on Monday afternoons with their class teacher, where they will engage in gymnastics. They will also have a second PE lesson with Mr. Duffy, focusing on Attack, Defend, and Shoot. We kindly request that their PE kit is brought to school and available throughout the week. Children should have both indoor and outdoor PE kits ready, as weather permitting, we may conduct lessons outdoors.
